Creative Advertising Gone Wild: Print Ads for Toothpaste

Ads are a dime a dozen, but great ads are rare. This week, we profile a recent print/street campaign for Signal Sensitive Toothpaste.

Signal’s advertising team is on fire with these fascinating print/street ads. If you’ve ever felt the merciless tooth pain from biting into too-cold cold ice cream, the above ad will certainly speak to you. But I’m sure the brand’s target audience has had much more traumatic experiences with their own tooth pain, hence the hilarious contraptions in the ads.

The ads pull the oldest trick in the book. They force the viewer to relive an unforgettable emotional experience in their lives, which makes the ads much harder to forget. Emotional experiences themselves are hard to forget, so if you can call up a strong emotional experience as the viewer watches your ad, you have a pretty effective campaign on your hands.

Creative Advertising Gone Wild: Pepsi on Halloween

Ads are a dime a dozen, but great ads are rare. This week, we profile Pepsi’s Halloween ad.

image

by Fausto Mendez / ad by Buzz in a Box

Pepsi dresses up as Coca-Cola for Halloween in the soda brand’s clever jab at its main competitor, sending the message that Coca-Cola is not the “real” cola. Coca-Cola is the fictional option.

Sometimes I wonder if the two companies secretly work together to ensure that each company gets about 50% of the market share. If they only mention each other in their ads, consumers would, over time, become “brainwashed” that those are really the only two suitable options in the market. It would be a brilliant marketing strategy, but I don’t have any hard evidence to back up those claims.

In any case, it seems like a no brainer. If I directed marketing for their companies, it’s exactly what’d I’d do.

Download this Free Font: Halloween Fonts for October Events

Finding the best free #fonts isn’t easy (except when we post them here), but it’s always good for business to have some extra out-of-the-box typefaces within arm’s reach. That’s why we’re always searching the Web for its best-kept-secret fonts.

By Fausto Mendez

This week, we feature a font pack with a focus on Halloween events. Unlike our free font series "Free Title Fonts for Commercial Use", this font pack is not pre-cleared for commercial use. The fonts are good to go for personal use in any setting, including parties, haunted houses, house decorations (interior and exterior) and more, but you’ll have to reach out to the font creator (or the current copyright holder) for permission to use these in consumer-facing marketing materials.

Click the links below to download the fonts, but if you pay close attention, the fonts that I used for the title and footer are not listed in the graphic. Those fonts are Raleway, a free font that is pre-cleared for commercial use, and KiloGram, another free font that is pre-cleared for commercial use. Thanks to Misty Cato Designs for the original list of fonts.

Creative Advertising Gone Wild: Print Ads for Hovis Bread

British brand Hovis just launched a new advertising campaign, and it’s really hard to stop staring.

image

By Fausto Mendez

Creating an effective ad that keeps your eyes glued for more than a few seconds is actually pretty hard to do - unless you’re exploiting sex. In that case, it’s actually pretty easy. Whatever the product, just make sure a naked model is holding it. That’s why we’re really impressed with a new set of ads out of agency JWT in London for Hovis, a popular bread brand in the UK. The ads keep eyes glued without the use of sex.

image

As you can see, there’s a lot to look at. The ads spark a sense of nostalgia (or parenthood in those of us with kids). The longer I stare, the more I seem to appreciate the smaller details, the more I long for that simple time when life was just about school grades, silly pranks, quick sandwiches and lots of dirt. Ah, the good-ol’ days.

I think I want a sandwich now. I guess the marketing effects are kicking in, or maybe it’s just lunch time.

How the Government Shutdown Affects Your Nachos

The government shutdown is in full effect… kind of. It’s in full effect on your nachos, at least.

image

By Fausto Mendez

We should all be aware of the government shutdown by now, but are you aware of how it will affect your nachos? We’ve already summarized the effects of the shutdown using yesterday’s top memes (with time-tested journalistic principles), but today, College Humor has a very educational and insightful piece on the shutdown’s effects as it relates to your nachos, including future nacho meals.

"After Democrats and Republicans failed to find common ground on the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as Obamacare, the United States Government has shut down. Although we have seen many articles detailing how this will affect our day to day life, no one has yet addressed how this shutdown will affect everyone’s favorite party food: nachos.

Will this shutdown affect the taste of my nachos?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: It shouldn’t. The government shutdown causes many nonessential federal employees to be placed on furlough, but it should not affect the way that cheese tastes when melted onto tortilla chips and dipped into salsa.”

We Bid Farewell & Congratulations to Breaking Bad’s Cast & Crew

image

By Fausto Mendez

It’s been a wild ride, but all good bad things have to come to an end. In the spirit of Breaking Bad's Walter White, let's hustle our asses off and make absurd amounts of money for the rest of the year.

The end of a really great TV show is really fun and really disappointing at the same time. You grow with these characters. You learn their strengths, weaknesses and everything else about them, and you learn to love them. Then, they’re gone… just like that. For those really great TV shows, such as Breaking Bad, it’s almost like ending a romantic relationship or feeling the withdrawal from a bad addiction.

We’ll miss the cast and crew. It’s sad the actors will rarely (if ever) share a stage together again. Oh well… I need to catch up on House of Cards anyway, and I’m not finished with Attack on Titan either. What show/book/game will be filling that empty hole in your heart over the next few months?

The New iPhone 5C Announced Today!

image

By Fausto Mendez

If you live in the USA, you may have heard a rumor or two that Apple’s releasing a new iPhone in October, and those rumors came true today. Introducing… the iPhone 5C .

image

Featuring the good ol’s fashioned internals of the iPhone 5, the new iPhone 5C ships with a 4-inch Retina Display and plastic, solid-colored case. The Facetime camera on the front and the flash on the back is upgraded, so camera fiends have something to look forward to. Data fiends may appreciate that this iPhone ships with more LTE bands than any other phone on the market today.

Otherwise, it’s exactly the same as the iPhone 5. Of course, it ships with the brand new and gorgeous iOS 7. Thanks to The Verge for the beautiful, live pics.

Yahoo! Logo Generator Transforms Text to Match Company’s New Logo

image

By Fausto Mendez

The Yahoo! Logo Generator has arrived, and it’s ready to transform your company name - or any text phrase - into a logo that matches the style of the company’s brand new, redesigned logo.

You may have heard over the weekend that Yahoo! just updated its logo, and whether or not you think the change makes sense or is worth the time/money, the entire Web is talking about it. So it definitely achieved at least one of its purposes: get everyone to focus on Yahoo! This week, the company’s making sure that the spotlight remains on itself by unveiling the Yahoo! Logo Generator, a single-serving website (a toy, really) that matches text to Yahoo!’s logo style.

image

The five-minute time waster was developed by Flickr employee Bertrand Fan, not Yahoo!, so it’s not an official Yahoo! project. Flickr being a property of Yahoo!, it’s likely that the Logo Generator is not only sanctioned by the company itself, but it was probably encouraged by the company’s marketing team too.

However, the story getting passed around the Web certainly makes it feel like a quirky, on-the-fly idea, which is great for marketing, and in any case, it’s an effective marketing strategy that has ensured the continuation of the conversation for at least another week.

#DIY Promotional Giveaway: Gorgeous Greeting Cards

image

By Fausto Mendez

If you’re a fan of #DIY crafts for personalized gifts, promotional giveaways and event supplies, you should consider adding a personal touch to your next gift, giveaway or event with gorgeous homemade greeting cards.

Sometimes, the best (and most affordable) way to say thanks is with a homemade gift, and a #DIY greeting card is perhaps one of the more fun, easier ways to express your creativity in appreciation of a great client.

This week’s #DIY post isn’t so much a tutorial as it is a source of inspiration. It’s pretty easy to figure out how each of the below cards are made. The key is layering and having plenty of gorgeous materials to work with, including colored paper, colored poster board, foam paper, buttons, cloth, ribbons, printed graphics, pens, plastic pearls, beads, colored pencils, lots of glue and whatever else you can think of.

We encourage you to use these designs as a starting point for your own original creations, and if you’re using these as promotional giveaways to thank your business’s clients, sneak in your logo in a tasteful and classy way. For example, a great spot is the inside cover because it allows you to dedicate the other page to your message, and the logo won’t disrupt or distract from the cover.

If you’re feeling extra thankful, you might even include some custom candies or custom lip balm, which feature your logo and artwork on the wrapper.

Pranksters Drop iMacs to Freak Out Mall Shoppers

By Fausto Mendez

It’s a beautiful, late morning, but it’s still early in the week. I know some of you out there are still feeling the Monday blues, but this secretly recorded video of terrified mall shoppers should cheer you up. Watch as the young comedians at YouTube channel Awesomeness TV drop empty iMac boxes to scare shoppers into freaking out about shattering precious, expensive gadgets that haven’t even made it home.

This prank could have easily turned into a viral publicity stunt for laptop insurance providers or warranty pushing retailers, such as Best Buy. Imagine the prankster distributing promotional giveaways, such as USB power adapters that are labeled with the insurance provider’s website. It could’ve turned into a powerful marketing campaign, but in its current form, it’s just a damn good prank video.
