Tuesday Favorites: “Show Us Your Type”

Today we stumbled upon a creative platform that marries two of our loves: Type and Cities.
"Show Us Your Type" challenges designers to create a poster with the designated city name as the focal point and subject of the art piece.  This month, the spotlight is aimed at Las Vegas, USA.  Designers are encouraged to submit their work before the deadline of February 23 here: http://showusyourtype.com/contacto.php

Download this Free Font: Five Wedding-Invite Font Pairs

Finding the best free #fonts isn’t easy (except when we post them here), but it’s always good for business to have some extra out-of-the-box typefaces within arm’s reach. That’s why we’re always searching the Web for its best-kept-secret fonts.

We’re no stranger to wedding-themed font collections and complimentative font pairings, but we’ve never featured a post that combined the two concepts until now. I guess I’m not much of a wedding fiend, but I do appreciate thoughtful font pairings. This week’s free font collection comes courtesy of Peter Loves Jane.

Above, you’ll find five font pairings that work beautifully to complete each other, as should any soon-to-be-married couple. Below, you’ll find the links to download the fonts.

1. Branboll Small + Ostrich Sans Rounded

2. Corneria Script + Linux Biolinum Capitals

3. Antrokas + Franklin Gothic Book

4. Respective + Bentham

5. Silk Script + Orator (Actually, Orator is not a free download. A free substitute could easily be Miso.)

Your advertising materials, event supplies and promotional giveaways are only as good as your typefaces (and perhaps the graphic designer on your payroll). With or without a stellar graphic designer, the right fonts can make a huge difference, and these hand-drawn fonts should fit into any project that aims for a rough-ish, not-so-polished feel. Get the fonts at the links below (list courtesy of Uber Chic for Cheap).

This week’s featured free-font set takes a different approach than the standard weekly list. Instead of supplying a list of gorgeous fonts, Tutvid did something really interesting, pairing free fonts together that really complement each other.

In the above photo, you’ll notice a quote by the legendary Star Wars character Yoda. The fonts in use are Alfa Slab One and Lora. This quote is one of my favorite lines in all of the Star Wars movies, tv shows, stories, etc. It’s very inspirational.

Check out the rest of the list at Tutvid. There’s 20 graphics like this, each featuring two fonts. Print them out, or use them as your computer’s wallpaper for your daily dose of inspiration. But don’t forget to download the fonts! Have fun!

This week, we feature a font pack with a focus on Halloween events. Unlike our free font series "Free Title Fonts for Commercial Use", this font pack is not pre-cleared for commercial use. The fonts are good to go for personal use in any setting, including parties, haunted houses, house decorations (interior and exterior) and more, but you’ll have to reach out to the font creator (or the current copyright holder) for permission to use these in consumer-facing marketing materials.

Click the links below to download the fonts, but if you pay close attention, the fonts that I used for the title and footer are not listed in the graphic. Those fonts are Raleway, a free font that is pre-cleared for commercial use, and KiloGram, another free font that is pre-cleared for commercial use. Thanks to Misty Cato Designs for the original list of fonts.

Fonts make a huge difference…

You should really value a graphic designer that can take a step back to examine his work from other perspectives.

“10 Fuckering Lights”. This is what happens when you hire lazy graphic designers, or maybe it’s what happens when you don’t hire graphic designers.

Best case scenario: store marks down your product, which makes it sell more than it would’ve without the mistake.

Worse case scenario: your product gets moved to the sex accessories aisle, which enables you to pioneer a new style of mood lighting in the bed room.

This week, we bring you Langdon, a free typeface by XLN Telecom in the UK. The company describes the typeface as “solid, serious, dependable.”

It’s easy to see why. The typeface stands out above all other language on the page, offering evenly spaced letters that are ripe for manipulation in your favorite graphics software. This one’s only for uppercase letters.

The font is free to use for both commercial and private purposes, so it’s unnecessary to contact the copyright holder for permission to use these fonts in your consumer-facing marketing materials, such as promotional giveaways, branded items for retail, event supplies, ads and more. Download the font for free at XLN’s website.

Finding the best free #fonts isn’t easy (except when we post them here), but it’s always good for business to have some extra out-of-the-box fonts within arm’s reach. That’s why we’re always searching the Web for its best-kept-secret fonts.

We continue our free-font series “Beautiful Title Fonts for Commercial Use” with another round of five gorgeous title fonts that are pre-cleared for commercial use, so you don’t need to seek the copyright holder’s permission to use these in your marketing materials, ads, promotional giveaways, retail items, event supplies, websites, business cards and any other commercial purpose.

Of course, it’s good etiquette to credit the font creator with a link to their profile or website. After all, the designers behind these fonts deserve at least a mention, and they always love to hear about how their fonts are used. So shoot them a friendly message with some photos if you’re feeling nice.

Actually, we love it when people send us photos of their creations that use the fonts we post here, so don’t be shy. Show off your creations on our Google+ page. Download the fonts at the links below.
