With so many distractions from chores, family, and television you may be struggling to stay focused. Using these simple tips, employers and employees alike can work remotely without losing sight of their top daily duties.

1. Communication Is Key

The most effective way to stay focused while working remotely is to have strong communication with your team! During your working hours, you need to be readily available to answer or ask any questions you may have. Having an open chain of communication between the whole company helps you think like one. Even science agrees, according to a study conducted by the Project Management Institute poor communication within a team led to project failure one-third of the time. If there is a disconnect between management and employees during remote work focus will also suffer. Great ways to always stay connected include frequent check-ins, always-on messaging, and virtual meetings.

2. Stick To A Schedule

When you were working in the office did you have a daily routine? Well, you can do the same from home! First and for most, be sure to have set work hours. To help maintain focus while working from home it is important to separate work time from playtime. Once you have your hours all figured out set daily goals to hit while working. Having a to-do list or checklist is great for keeping focus through the workday. Have goals that you can do every day helps our brains prioritize the important things. If you start to schedule out your day and make it a habit you will be right back into your daily grind.

3. Create A Space

Your home is now your office and it is important to treat it as such. To improve your focus create a dedicated workplace. While it may seem nice to set up on the couch and have the tv on in the background, you are setting your self up for failure. To increase focus you need to limit distractions. Find a quiet place with a desk and comfortable chair to set up shop. Be sure your family knows that your workplace is yours and it should be respected. You don’t want people walking in and out, interrupting your work. If it helps try dressing professionally to get in the right mindset for work. Finding a place with little to no distractions will help improve your focus.

4. Utilize Technology

We have so much technology available to us at any moment. Now is the time to take advantage while we have the chance. With so much new tech you can make your life a little easier. A great way to stay focused is to try and do better. With so many helpful applications and programs at your fingertips, it’s easy to improve your focus. Make technology become your virtual assistant. Schedule alerts for important tasks and appointments, use email filters to block out unimportant messages, find software that checks for mistakes in your work, pre-schedule your emails, and social media posts. When you have less nonsense to worry about you can begin to focus on the important things.

5. Avoid Burnout

You may think remote work is all about relaxing and less stress. In reality, working from home can cause more stress. Because you are now working from home it can be difficult to separate work life and home life. Checking an email from bed late at night, taking calls while you make lunch, or working early in the morning to get ahead of your work can lead to burnout.
